How My Breast Pump Saved My Life

Breastfeeding (exclusively) and pumping saved my sanity. I really believe this helped me prevent or get through postpartum depression. Being a stay at home mom and going through all these changes (especially in my situation) can very lonely. Being at home all day when everyone else has somehow “gotten over” the baby fever and I’m left alone with him. But all this fulfillment I had was through ofcourse caring for him and being able to feed him completely. Motherhood and breastfeeding had given me purpose like nothing ever had.

It helped me chill on the expenses. As a stay at home mom and being out of work and income for a while now and giving birth and having my baby, it can be quite stressful to think of providing. When I gave birth my husband was also out of work and diapers can be quite expensive so we just felt so blessed that we didn’t have to buy formula. It eased my mind that I am doing my part and being able to provide in that way.

It’s a cure for anxiety: they say releasing breastmilk releases endorphins. Benefits of endorphins is boosting positive feelings and self-esteem which is ofcourse important at this stage. It’s also been found to help you lose weight because it regulates your appetite and lessens your eagerness to stuff your face by alleviating depression.

Relaxation and less stress. Whenever I breastfed my son I thought it forced me to be in one place seated for hours on end. But when I changed my mindset – it made me be in the moment in this fast paced world. I watch my son feed, I love him and enjoy him – I could rest and just be.

Then I could also be a total couch potato and catch up on Netflix and be on my phone and relax. Our babies are connected to us and I do believe that they stay attached to us to keep us calm and find rest with them. And with that I learned the balance.

My first breastpump was a gift to me and it was very affordable too. It was the best breastpump for that time in my life when I was just trying out pumping first and see how I like it. But well after that phase, I tried investing on my Spectra S1 which is one of the most famous and highly recommended hospital grade breastpumps. It was quite pricey but it is definitely worth the investment because of how efficient it is, it saves me so much time and pumps out in about half the time I used to pump before so I get more time to do other things. It’s also rechargeable and portable so it didn’t have me stuck on a wall plug!

imgres.jpg

This thing also took out all my clogged ducts and saved me from fever and chills! It also helped me to save a ton of milk since it draws out milk so well!

Building up my milk stash also gave me time away for date nights, rest, and it bought me time to heal when I got a bleb!

Time management and discipline. It helped me become more organized. Before being a mom or a breastfeeding mom at that, I used to get things done here and there at my own pace and in my own time. But now, each time I set my baby down for a nap or for bedtime I knew my clock was ticking so I literally had to schedule each chore and anything I wanted to get done. At first I thought I was paralyzed and that I would never get to a place where I can balance it all but I got used to it and I got better at managing my time. Now, I get to take care of the ones I love and do what I love both at the same time.

Responsibility. Aside from being a mom, you also need to provide and make milk (this takes a lot of energy too, believe me), also prepare and secure it (pumping, ‘making’ a whole bottle, and making sure it’s stored safely and correctly).

Faith and Spirituality: it strengthened my faith and dependence on God in his miracles and provision everyday- you never know when you might dry up and everyday is a blessing- its beautiful and refreshing. It was so beautiful to see how God made a woman with purpose and how I felt that this is what I am made to do. I can nurture and nourish my child because of my body and his blessing.

Along with that it helped me appreciate the female body. I used to think women are weak and its just biologically how we were created. But it was just realization upon realization on how much women can endure. We cannot deny the strength of a man but its just that women’s strength is of a different kind. It may not be as strong, but it endures, it perseveres. It helped me pride in myself on what my body can handle, how it restores and replenishes.

It brought out the researcher in me. it made me a herbal hippie freak who just rubs breastmilk on everything. I also read so much about its uses and its miracles in every drop.

It made me think healthier, take care of myself along with the baby because I knew what I ate and my whole well-being also affects my breastmilk production. This is is such a great benefit to me since it keeps me strong enough to endure the sleepless nights and also possibly lose the baby weight or even more.

It made me be one with community: with other moms, stay at home moms and pumping moms, etc. And mind you, that is so not me. But it made me really believe on that quote that no man is an island and mothers bear lots of responsibilities and honestly I would not have made it on my own without other moms on social media who are so nice! They honestly respond to comments on Instagram, Youtuber moms. There is this mom world and community that is so loving and accepting.

It made me want to mother every other child out there. I felt that there was so much love to give. I read about this journey of women in tribes who breastfeed each other’s babies as if they were their own hence the quote “It takes a village”. I felt that I was so blessed everyday and I wanted to share that with other people so I joined a Facebook group with moms with premature babies asking for some breastmilk donations. I just think that being able to exclusively breastfeed my son and pump on top of that is already astounding and its a blessing meant to be shared.

It revealed my commitment, dedication, love and passion that I never knew existed in me. I have never had such a strong belief and principle in something such as promoting breastfeeding, normalizing it, and spreading education about it which I continually do to this day after 18 months of breastfeeding. I post, blog and answer anyone’s questions about breastfeeding and anything I can do to help to spread knowledge to everyone. It needs to be everyone to normalize it and knowledge so they would understand why.

Girls, women, mothers and future mothers need the education that I never had before having my son. Men need to know in order to not take it maliciously and thus, normalize it. This is not to accept ‘nudity’ but accept it as a natural thing simply because it is. Boys, men and future fathers should also be educated so they would support their wives in their breastfeeding journey because it really is hard.

And for the public, for elders, people who choose not to have children and the like; even if it doesn’t affect your personal life, it’s still important to know about it so you would be more open to see it in public places. For elder men or women who never breastfed or maybe you are just more conservative – yes, I get that. But in my experience my son hated a breastfeeding cover and it was never my choice but my son’s. It’s also very hard to breastfeed in public while handling a child and maybe I can never actually truly explain that, but all I ask is empathy for mothers like me and know that its honestly never the intention to offend you or ‘flash‘ you. And besides, why would we?

August: Flavors of the Month

I have a couple of discoveries, musts and needs for the rainy season and all seasons! And by the way, to all the mothers out there, happy world breastfeeding week to us! Celebrate with some treats on here, continue reading!

Ysabelle’s Anti-Mosquito Cologne

It’s so perfect for the rainy season! I’ve been using this constantly and it’s so easy just to spray instead of having to lather it like anti-mosquito lotion. I also prefer liquid spray so my little one won’t feel sticky – I know I would hate it, and I don’t want him to be uncomfortable. Especially with my very wriggly baby! It smells so good too with a scent of lemon and citronella that makes it super effective! When the rainy season started, I saw some mosquito bites on my little one’s legs and it’s pretty scary especially with the dengue outbreak. After using this continuously daily, I have not seen one bite!

Coobie Nursing Bra

I bought a cheap nursing bra in a department store and it worked fine but I was so shook having tried this bra! It’s sooo comfortable and supportive, the material is so luxuriously soft and it’s heaven on the nipples – especially if yours are on fire with so much breastfeeding! My ratty nursing bra was also so hard to clip and unclip – I guess you get what you pay for and having such a quality nursing bra is so vital. Especially when you really are committing to breastfeeding or like me, you just figured it out late into your breastfeeding journey. Make the investment and you won’t regret it! I am also happy to share that on my birthday week there is an exciting sale on Coobie and ends on my birthday, August 7! Grab yours now!

Sorella Garments

For the non-nursing moms, Sorella Garment’s
brassieres and underwear are so supportive not just for your breasts but for your butt too!
When you shrink into your sexy momma bod,

you would want new and supportive underwear. And momma, replace those old ratty panties! You would need new ones to feel like your old self – or your new self, a sexy new momma! Don’t neglect yourself and sometimes you just need a little somethin’ somethin’ to remind you of that! Do it for you, and for hubby too.

Galactobombs

What really reminded me of this when I tried it is it’s like galactic – out of this world! It’s funny ’cause having looked this up ‘galactic’ actually means relating to the milky way galaxy.

I would have one or two cookies for a quick snack and I would literally be shooting out milk (take note, it was a stream and not just spraying)! Never experienced that before and certainly this was the significant reason (Also with caring for yourself such as drinking water, eating meals, etc)!

Universal Stainless Kitchen Set

My husband and I are fairly newly weds and we don’t have much kitchenware and getting a Crown Signature set from Universal Stainless Ware was a great start for our cooking needs. It’s a 7-piece set which will cater to all basic cooking at home. It’s super easy to clean – perfect for the busy stay at home mom like me, no more scrubbing with it’s mirror polish finish! And as new parents, it’s definitely easier now to just order your set from their Lazada shop here.

Reformage Mousse Cream & Gold Moisturizing Soap

Skin Enhance has skin products that make your skin feel luxurious when you use them! Their Gold Moisturizing soap (that also has a whitening version) and their Mousse Cream are my particular favorites! The soap lathers so smoothly when bathing but not too thick like commercial brands from the grocery stores. The Mousse Cream is pretty interesting since it protects your skin from UV radiation at the same time it’s a face cream! It combats premature fine lines and deep wrinkles. This month I turn 27 and I hate to admit I’m reaching 30 and this is definitely needed for prevention!

Timeflys Baby Monitor

We have such an inconsistent internet connection and I think that’s mostly common for most households here in the Philippines which is why I fell in love with this baby monitor right away! It’s rechargeable, it has a night light and a couple of lullabies. It has a small screen on the parent’s sort of ‘remote’ that’s super light and you can clip it onto your clothing. You can see the temperature in the room, change the songs and it’s volume, open the night light, and a two-way communication feature to comfort your baby if he wakes. The other stays beside your baby and you can hear him stirring and you can check on him. It’s such a great way to monitor your baby without having to worry since you would never lose connection with it and it has a wide range as well!

Ava’s Kitchen Spreads

I tried all of their flavors and everything is just so daamn good! It caters to all kinds of tastes you prefer and they’re so natural and healthy – you can actually see the bits almonds, herbs and malunggay (moringa)! I also kept it in the fridge as per instructions of storing it and even from the cold, they’re suprisingly very spreadable especially on warm toast! It’s a super healthy spread compared to others if you’re watching your lactation plus your weight! We all need to shed that baby weight, right?

Pomona Spreads

For those who don’t lactate, Pomona spreads are an interesting and healthy option! They are so yummy and also healthy – they have no preservatives and homemade. You would really know that actually with the way you have to store them – you should definitely keep them in the fridge because they are made from fresh ingredients! As a mom, I really am particular with the stuff I eat if they’re fresh and organic. The flavors are so yummy too such as Banana Butter, I mean how yummy does that sound? Even better when you get to try it! It’s heavenly and you get to satisfy your sweet tooth with this instead!

Hope this helped when deciding what to snack on, and stuff you actually need for daily living. These may be ‘flavors of the month’ but definitely investments for the long haul too!

Again, happy world breastfeeding week! Let’s support mommas out there and encourage them wherever they are on their breastfeeding journey and however they choose to feed their babies!

Morning Mommy Pick-Me-Ups

As a mom we definitely need some fuel to get our engines going with hyper kids, too too early mornings, and from nights of sleep deprivation. So pick your ‘poison’, try these out and see what gets you up and running on the daily! Maybe you can even switch it up every once in a while too!

Protein shakes.

This is such a great fill! Also if you’re more of a cold drink kinda gal. It will keep you full for longer and you get all those goood nutrients and protein, duh. You can mix in your greens and never notice they’re even there! This is great especially if like me, you don’t really get to get your daily dose of veggies. You could also sprinkle some of Ava’s Kitchen‘s malunggay flakes into your shake, you wouldn’t even notice them there! For lactation or simply to amp up your health; moringa has such amazing health benefits. You could even share an ounce or two with your little one!

Tea. Black, green or anything in between!

This is a great way to detox but still get that caffeine craving in. You can add some milk too! You can also have it iced – I have been obsessed with this tamarind-flavored Tsaa from Luntilikha. I literally always look forward to my next cup and it’s so healthy, sweetened with coco sap sugar.

58113550_2531324500437059_6846657506001813504_n

Coffee.

Oohh, good old coffee! It’s best just plain bold and black for a healthier option, it detoxifies and it’s zero calorie this way! If you’re not a fan, then sprinkle everything you want to it! Some cinnamon, sugar or stevia, etc. Is it warm out? Try a cold brew!

How about a french press? Its a more affordable option as compared to getting a coffee machine plus its a space saver too! If it’s on your daily, then a coffee machine might just be a great investment for you instead of your regular Starbucks on your credit card!

Screen shot 2019-07-24 at AM 12.31.02

A healthy but super yummy option is Luntilikha‘s Kape. Like all other products of theirs it’s also made with coco sap sugar. If you’re into sweetened and creamed coffee this is such a great and healthy choice!

Don’t like coffee? Hot cocoa!

66042016_2596036980632477_5751865033671835648_n

Kakao only has 7 grams of coco sap sugar per sachet and also suitable for diabetics. Other sugars such as brown, white, muscovado, (or even demarara, turbinado, molasses, sucanat) sugars have a high glycemic index of 65 to 100 Gi per serving.

When I tried a cup of this, I couldn’t even believe it! It has such a luxurious and decadent cocoa taste. Definitely a must try! Have it hot or over ice! I also have this when I’m craving some chocolate or something sweet. That way, I can really savor it and have such a healthier alternative to a chocolate bar! I can just picture having a cup on a cold rainy morning.. Aah.. Perf.

But oh, I almost forgot the most important drink and one that you simply must drink before any of these: Water. It’s the best drink to wake up your organs. There are just so much benefits to drinking water before drinking or eating anything else in the morning. Drink a glass or even two if you can before any of the above! Trust me on this.

This blog is so graciously sponsored by Luntilikha. They have such amazing organic but delicious Coffee (Kape), Hot Cocoa (Kakao), and Tea (Tsaa)! Their products are for every kind of person and if you try it, I promise you’re never going back to your crappy powdered quote on quote iced tea, or sacheted instant coffee or hot cocoa! Take care of your health and switch over: support local and live healthy!

Check out their social media here. Give them a follow and get your cups filled with these goods! Yum.

2019: Revamp Yourself!

2019revampyourself

We all want to have this new look for the new year. What’s a better time, right? Here are some of my helpful tips to save money despite trying to look dashing as we all approach 2019!

My first step to revamping yourself is to be resourceful first! I know a lot of people spend tons and tons trying to recreate their wardrobe and yes, I’m all for investing in your wardrobe but I’m pretty sure with the stuff you’ve accumulated (and I’m sure there are a lot!) there are some hidden treasures. The first step is to rediscover your closet. This is actually a pretty fun task for me: trying on some of my interesting pieces, mixing and matching, seeing if they still fit (haha!) and all that jazz. I find myself always putting on a fashion show infront of my mirror. Make a day of it – enjoy it. With this, you can also already pick out which pieces you want to give away or save for a rainy day (Stay tuned for my next blog where I’ll expound on rediscovering your closet).

Now that you’ve narrowed down your pieces to those that is the style you want to stick to for the year or for the season, look at your theme. Take a good look at what kind of style you love. Do you love the girly-girl style, preppy, sporty, etc. You’ll see your own personal preference and style with your clothing – it says a lot about your personality and lifestyle too! So you’ll get to know what other quality pieces you need; the pieces that take the most beating since you use them on the daily or every week at the least!

I know this is a long process but if you are anything like me – I’m very passionate about clothing, style, quality, and fashion. And if you are too, I think you’ll find it fun, anyway! Our next step is to decide what style you want. This sounds redundant but if you want a makeover you would have to remake yourself but maybe not too far off. For example, if you have a preppy style you can integrate a sporty look with your wardrobe. I assessed my clothing and I hadn’t realized my style is a girly-girl (eek!) perhaps because of all my left over corporate clothing pieces back from when I worked in an office. So it’s definitely time for a closet purge! I admit I can be quite a hoarder and my husband can attest to that but it takes tons of effort to find clothes you appreciate and fit you well, right? Especially those investment pieces. So even if I don’t think I’ll be using them anytime soon, I just store them away in vacuum bags.

So let’s get back to the point (haha!) So I saw myself having a girly-girl type of wardrobe and now as a mom, I want to try the sporty-yoga mom type of look. I’ve stored away my skin-tight peplum skirts, blazers, etc and I whipped out my investment pieces like Nike leggings and tops, Tory Burch sneakers, I even took out my converse sneaks! Anything that would go with the look I want to emulate this year (and now while my son is still young since I have to be comfortable at all times). I also piece together certain outfits in one hanger since I tend to gear towards the girly-girl style since I guess I’ve been used to it for so long!

Now that we’re done with that: Find an idol, a style icon & the like. Now I have a ton to say about this so hold onto your underpants! When finding a style icon, pick someone you love whom you always see their outfits as something you would actually wear in your day to day life, special occasions and such. Style is like your personality. Let me give you an example that exemplifies this statement. If you wear something that’s not “you”, there is a high chance that people will know. If you are a hoodie type of person and you suddenly wear a skintight dress, don’t you think it might come as a shock?! Kidding aside. You wouldn’t be comfortable eitherway if that’s not your thing and try to keep in mind the look you want to emulate this year. It can be very overwhelming to look at all these public figures so remind yourself when you’ve narrowed down your choices.

Next, she (or he!) Should of the same size as you. There are some specific things to consider this if you have the time to research. But the most basic thing is someone very very close to your build. But you may also consider breast size, face shape, body shape, length, width, and etc (I’ll explain this further in a sec as to why). I know this may be difficult since there are tons of gorgeous public figures but just set your eyes in the bigger picture. There are bigger build models now like my personal favorite, Iskra (check out her IG: instagram.com/iskra). It may not be a hollywood star; it could be your favorite youtuber, instagrammer, just someone you could see often posting on social media. A hollywood star would be better though and I’ll get to why.

Hollywood stars have tons and tons of consultants, personal stylists, people purchase their clothes for them and what fits them to the T! Its like getting professional help and assistance for free! We’re all here to just catch on the vibe and pick out bits and pieces of their outfits, an ootd or even build a wardrobe that was “professionally” handcrafted. I think this particular tip will change your life if you think about it.

Now let’s get to why it would be better to actually find someone very close to your particular size like breast/cup size, face shape, body shape and the like. This may leave you wondering! Some tight fitted clothing may not be as flattering to you if your “idol” (let’s just call them that) has a different cup size whether bigger or smaller. To have a more accurate knowledge on yourself get your bra size fitted! There are some places where sales ladies will assist you such as Marks and Spencer or even La Senza! Just ask them!

2019revampyourself

And body shape: if your upper body is a bit fuller than your lower body and etc. There are specifics on this and Lord knows we don’t all have that highly coveted hourglass figure. If you want to do more in depth research there are 5 most common female body shapes: rectangle, triangle, hourglass, the inverted triangle, and the round.

Face shape. This could help you out with hairstyles that are suitable for you. A classic hairstyle that sticks with you through seasons is a great tip. It keeps you looking young. When you see a picture from 5 years ago and you have the same haircut, when people see it, they have this illusion that hey, you haven’t aged at all! If you want to experiment every once in a while to recreate yourself or just feel like you want a change, still look to your idol. If you have the same face shape, you could take a picture of her to your dresser and tell them you want that hairstyle. I’ve done this dozens of times! And trust me, they’ll even thank you for it. It saves you the disappointment and they ofcourse would never want you leaving the dresser unhappy. This helps you know what you’re gonna look like when walking out of the salon, and you wouldn’t wanna look like a poodle! You can never be too careful with your hair, they’re one of the aspects that people notice right away(And even you, when you look in the mirror!). I don’t know about you, but having a bad haircut just annoys me to bits with myself. It’s your crowning glory!

Still in line with face shape, picking sunglasses or glasses that fit you. You could have their eyepieces as inspirations on what to pick up in your optical shop or even online! Once you know your face shape and the shape or style of shades you want, its easy peasy! If you’re an exception to this rule, like say my husband; there are brands of shades that don’t fit the wideness of his face (even caps and shoes!). So if you are the exception to the rule, go try ’em on in the store first. Find brands that fit you & shopping online will be a ton easier!

(From the previous point) Finding brands. Once you’ve nailed down the pieces and the look you want, finding brands that are more your style and price range, you would only need to hit a few stores. It makes shopping a lot easier (unless shopping’s your cardio! Haha. But it is really–) look out for shops like Uniqlo who have immediate alterations in-store! Saves you the hassle of dropping by an alteration shop, I know I have mountains of clothes I promised myself I would have altered but never did! If you find certain stores for specific clothing items even better! Example for bras: la senza, for pants: levi’s, for shirts: Uniqlo. Keep these brands in mind so if you have to go for a quick run for something you need you already have a store you want to hit up and check out. Sometimes if you know the item you want to repurchase you can just go to their online store!

I hope this blog helped you out – I just love these topics and my next blog will be in line with this too! It’s almost the new year, let’s all get vamped up!
